Foot Facts: Post Tibial Tendonitis
Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction occurs when the posterior tibial tendon becomes inflamed or torn. As a result, the tendon may not be able to provide stability and support for the arch of the foot, resulting in flatfoot. The posterior tibial tendon attaches the calf muscle to the bones on the inside of the foot. The main function of the tendon is to hold up the arch and support the foot when walking.
Symptoms:
-
Arch of foot collapses
-
Heel pain/spurs
-
Arch pain
-
Pain and swelling of tendon (visible on the inside of the heel)
Caused By:
-
Overuse of the muscle
-
Over pronation
-
Flat feet
Recommendations:
-
Limit activity to help with pain and swelling
-
Stay off of your feet for a few days
-
Wear orthotics with rear foot posting
-
Select footwear with good longitudinal arch support
-
Cushioned insoles will help shock absorbency
